Pepper!

Pepper is another doll created from the free Lily Sugar&Cream pattern, with some modifications :-)  She has Joyce's great knee joints, and her head is move-able.  You can find both of these techniques on the blog...look along the left sidebar for "Tutorials," and "Tutorials by Joyce."

I used Vanna's Choice yarn in beige for most of her body.  I really like the way this yarn works up for crochet (and knit) dolls.  Her lower legs and her clothing are Sugar&Cream yarn.  Her hair is a dreamy tencel/wool blend from Berroco called Lustra.  It made heavenly ringlets :-)

Enjoy the crochet!

  5. I love what you did with her hair. That yarn looks great. I have also had a good result with Vanna yarn--making some small crochet toys. Her dress is a neat pattern also.

  6. Beth, your dolls are always so desirable. My grabdaughter Isabelle loves Sugar and Cream (I've been told to learn to crochet!)

  7. Love the vibrant blue. I'm gonna have to try this doll. Question though? Did you use the recommended hook size?
    Thanks,

  9. Thank you so much for the good words, Fiona, Connie and RetroSandie!

Fiona, crocheting is way simpler than knitting, for me anyway :-)

Connie, I used the recommended E hook for the doll, and an F hook for the clothing. Vanna's Choice yarn works up smaller than Lily Sugar&Cream for the body, and I crochet very tightly, so my gauge is probably tighter than the one suggested in the instructions.

    1. Thanks Beth, I too, crochet dolls very tightly, don't like the styffing to show. Do you like the Vanna's because of the color choices or the softness or both?
      Thanks,
      til` next time

    2. Connie, I love the colors and I love the way Vanna's Choice makes up for toys. The texture of the yarn seems to 'close up' the holes that crochet fabric has. My problem with using Sugar&Cream for the doll bodies is that the holes seem more pronounced.

  15. I love your doll! I was wondering how you did the loops for her hair.

  16. I use a loop stitch for the bangs. There are online tutorials for how to make this stitch; here is one:

    http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-crochet-the-loop-stitch.html

It isn't exactly the way I do it, but should give you a similar result. You can also make loopy curls by making chain st loops...work 8 to 12 chain sts, then sl st in the next st. Make a series of these and you'll have nice, curly bangs :-)

  17. Wow! Beth I have not been to your site for a bit and I am amazed at what you have done with the lily doll and the bluette. I used to make porcelain bluettes years ago and your doll is outstanding. I will have to pick my hook up again you have so inspired me :0)
