Knit Travel Doll by Fiona McDonald

I would have thought that knitting a sweater would have over-dosed me on knitting for a while, but not so!  I've been wanting to make Fiona McDonald's travel doll, a doll pattern freely available on Ravelry, ever since she posted it over a year ago.  I wish I hadn't waited so long :-)

This is Columbine; she is 12 inches tall knitted in light worsted yarn (Bernat Super Value) and size 3 needles (3.25mm).  She is knit flat then seamed up the back.  I love the use of light needlesculpting and painted eyes, a specialty of Fiona's doll patterns.

The doll made up quickly; it took three days of lazy knitting to make her and wig her.

Next up, some undies and clothing for Columbine :-)

If you are interested in making this doll, here is the link to her on Ravelry.  You need an account there, but it is free.

  1. Hey there, Joyce!

I really enjoyed making this doll; the next one I make is going to have a move-able head. Like the crochet dolls, the torso will be knit up to the neck, then extend the neck a bit more. Knit the head separately, and join like the crochet move-able heads. Should be fun.

But, before that, I want to make up some clothing for this one.

This doll may even get me involved in Ravelry...I've been a member since 2009 but never could get the hang of it. But just looking at the sweet Travel dolls made by others has hooked me :-)

Can't wait to see your Cotton Rabbits' fox!

    1. Margaret, I mostly crochet too, but it was fun to learn to knit, and this doll is so sweet and easy. You might want to give it a try :-)

  5. I most certainly will look you up on Ravelry; sounds like a great way to keep up with your busy needle-n-hooks :-) One of the things I really like about Ravelry is all the information you fill out on your project.

    I'll see you over there!

  6. Hi Beth, I made one last night as well! Not as good as yours, but fun to make and hopefully the next will have a rounder head - mine seems larger/longer than yours.

  7. Hi Beth,

Long time admirer of your inspirational blog, first time commenter.

I am wondering if I have missed instructions for the eyes in this post. Is there a tutorial I can follow?

Thank you for sharing your amazing patterns with us for free. I have shared the link to your blog many times on crochet doll pages, as I believe it is the most comprehensive guide on the whole internet.

    Cheers, Monique

    1. Thank you so much for your good words, Monique. The instructions for making this doll's eyes are with Fiona's pattern, which is freely available on Ravelry. I have similar instructions for making Manga eyes under the Manga Spirits patterns on the left sidebar.

Fiona includes a template for her eye, that fits this doll very nicely.

      Hopefully this will help :-)

      warmly,

      Beth
