As I get older, I find working with the finer yarns I enjoyed using are harder to see and work with. Yet I still like smaller dolls.<p></p><p><br /></p><p>And with prices going up everywhere, good value-priced yarns become more desireable to me. My favorite is Red Heart Super Saver. A particularly good yarn for making toys, as it wears like iron, and comes in large skeins that are valued priced. Not to mention, a boodle of colors, including some great skin tones.</p><p><br /></p><p>So here is a very simple crochet doll, using worsted yarn for the body, hair, and clothing. She stands eight inches tall without the wig cap. Being retired, I can make the doll in one day, and have the evening to read or watch a movie! There is no definition for feet or hands. She is crocheted in one piece, with the arms crocheted into the body. No internal frame or special neck stabilzing, except for a twisted rope of yarn.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYHHGU5ruu96Zfqco8nBdCx7UU2Wo47QsjQhNmlLpBcxeqyUTXIrhmPxhPOzjZTNsrCToTzCSkdMIq2-O1vgJVy8YFw82jswoNFTHBPyZcsZeED57yCbbhDn60d7d2BHmd7MF-2SIMXgpXVwwDBg-6sDgYtvhNSCbWb2QhKLNy4Bfc9fg3WhRjVIzQyME/s4032/IMG_20231121_164728~2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYHHGU5ruu96Zfqco8nBdCx7UU2Wo47QsjQhNmlLpBcxeqyUTXIrhmPxhPOzjZTNsrCToTzCSkdMIq2-O1vgJVy8YFw82jswoNFTHBPyZcsZeED57yCbbhDn60d7d2BHmd7MF-2SIMXgpXVwwDBg-6sDgYtvhNSCbWb2QhKLNy4Bfc9fg3WhRjVIzQyME/w480-h640/IMG_20231121_164728~2.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br /><p>And, she is just in time for the Friday after Thanksgiving! The one of the left, the smaller, used Bernat Super Value yarn. The one on the right used Red Heart Super Saver yarn. Same hook, same number of stitches.</p><p><br /></p><p>The Bernat yarn worked up smaller, as it is thinner than the Red Heart yarn:</p><p><br /></p><p>Bernat - 7 ounces/ 440 yards</p><p>Red Heart - 7 ounces/ 364 yards</p><p><br /></p><p>That is a pretty big difference for two value priced yarns that are both labeled as Worsted Weight/ Medium/4. And you can see it in the way they work up.</p><p><br /></p><p>Not only that, the Bernat yarn feels cheaper. I do not care for it, and I would not recommend it.</p><p><br /></p><p>So, where is the best place to buy Red Heart Super Saver? Try JoAnn's Fabrics. If they don't have it in stock, you can order it online. I've tried ordering Red Heart from Michaels...but you have to order SIX skeins for home delivery! I might want six skeins of a skin color, but not for all the other colors. Yarnspiration carries Red Heart, but it is almost twice as expensive from them as it is from JoAnn's.</p><p><br /></p><p>So, enjoy the day, and enjoy the crochet!</p>Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15174223079054928870noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647790914647612650.post-66696201449046716572023-06-13T19:05:00.002-04:002023-06-13T19:10:15.509-04:00"Not Recommendable" by Facebook<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXFNsJ3umY10WiqeomWfSN9nNlRrQqBnYQ7taUVi8WImxdcfhzDw66rwK3KWAHQmw0Jlq0EB9JYYjwYQRbXhwYcWgbSu36D-jTlHyAmqDNLgMi30SuQg9cg-42NRYIEXLlI6z-2hvd1Vum059jM3fRDzKsBSuMpYJLn8-IrQ8JfCDqHAmK87QfbNpJ/s3973/IMG_20230126_190001.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3973" data-original-width="2723" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXFNsJ3umY10WiqeomWfSN9nNlRrQqBnYQ7taUVi8WImxdcfhzDw66rwK3KWAHQmw0Jlq0EB9JYYjwYQRbXhwYcWgbSu36D-jTlHyAmqDNLgMi30SuQg9cg-42NRYIEXLlI6z-2hvd1Vum059jM3fRDzKsBSuMpYJLn8-IrQ8JfCDqHAmK87QfbNpJ/w438-h640/IMG_20230126_190001.jpg" width="438" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Artwork by J R R Tolkien</div><p></p><p><br /></p><p>I am a tremendous fan of all the works of J R R Tolkien. My page is known as 'Marigold Brandyfoot'</p><p><br /></p><p>Today, Facebook publishes on my page the following statement:</p><div class="xzueoph x1k70j0n" style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;"><span class="x193iq5w xeuugli x13faqbe x1vvkbs x10flsy6 x1lliihq x1s928wv xhkezso x1gmr53x x1cpjm7i x1fgarty x1943h6x x4zkp8e x41vudc x1603h9y x1u7k74 x1xlr1w8 xzsf02u x1yc453h" color="var(--primary-text)" dir="auto" style="display: block; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; font-weight: 700; line-height: 1.2; max-width: 100%; min-width: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; word-break: break-word;">Your Page is not recommendable</span></div><div class="xzueoph x1k70j0n" style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;"><span class="x193iq5w xeuugli x13faqbe x1vvkbs x10flsy6 x1lliihq x1s928wv xhkezso x1gmr53x x1cpjm7i x1fgarty x1943h6x x1tu3fi x41vudc x1lkfr7t x1lbecb7 xo1l8bm xi81zsa x1yc453h" color="var(--secondary-text)" dir="auto" style="display: block; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.0625rem; line-height: 1.1765; max-width: 100%; min-width: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; word-break: break-word;">Content on your Page is preventing it from being suggested to people. Two days ago, I did a post regarding the banning of books, asking when the books of Tolkien might find themselved banned from middle and high school libraries. This is the only thing I can think of that would have lead to the above chastisment from Facebook. Size 10 crochet cotton was a favorite medium of mine for making small doll clothing, but as my hands get a bit older, and my eyes a bit dimmer, manipulating and seeing the stitches has become less than fun. And honestly, crochet has to be fun!<p></p><p><br /></p><p>Above is an example of crochet Hitty's camisole and petticoat. On the left, they are worked in DK weight cotton yarn; on the right, size 10 crochet cotton. There is more detail and better drape with size 10 cotton, but I am happy with the way the DK cotton outfit turned out. One thing that occured to me as I was making the DK weight outfit: crochet the petticoat to the last round of the camisole, and reduce the bulkiness at the waistline!</p><p>Here are links to both of the patterns:</p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1c_LjdTTk1OyAndBoX8XB566nvsFk5Ogc/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Camisole and Petticoat in size 10 crochet cotton</a></p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sy2QEvIKm3TbWZzoaSgmWvE0WLqHSwvp/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Camisole and Petticoat in DK weight cotton</a></p><p><br /></p><p>Crochet Hitty also has a tee shirt and overalls in DK weight yarn:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5SLqj0DlKMpn_1f1mk3m4ie4GYfvcJ_QHXr5GRID7Dnmkc7iJi1k8RyN7hpXF0ciTNZkAsqIdF1TOHEowpjMjKIK2-yVrnKVy-ncGBqcFUK6mlLUmQnaUQ8YAXHBaSMy3YR1xawBdSOfuTN2lo9wabNHlgyo-CdHL6fXG7mnYTW_6xpGLO67vdQcJ/s615/mosaic65a24908d3cb13fd627735709cddfe07c121318c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="310" data-original-width="615" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5SLqj0DlKMpn_1f1mk3m4ie4GYfvcJ_QHXr5GRID7Dnmkc7iJi1k8RyN7hpXF0ciTNZkAsqIdF1TOHEowpjMjKIK2-yVrnKVy-ncGBqcFUK6mlLUmQnaUQ8YAXHBaSMy3YR1xawBdSOfuTN2lo9wabNHlgyo-CdHL6fXG7mnYTW_6xpGLO67vdQcJ/w640-h322/mosaic65a24908d3cb13fd627735709cddfe07c121318c.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>And here is a link:</p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sXZTw32uQFQ05YOf4nZr_-jRPsboG_gC/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">Overalls and Tee Shirt in DK weight cotton</a></p><p><br /></p><p>Coming soon...a full skirted dress and apron pinafore in DK weight cotton. Between the two of us, we made dozens of dolls, with wardrobes and accessories and keepsake boxes. It was great doll fun.</p><p><br /></p><p>Fast forward. A few days ago someone asked me for these patterns, and she was directed to the blog posts that contained them. As I scrolled through the posts, I was reminded of all these wonderful dolls, our enjoyment, and also of so much that both Joyce and I have learned in the way of dollmaking techniques since this pattern was first created.</p><p><br /></p><p>So I went back to the pattern, and tweaked it with some updates, added options for leg and arm attachment; made the torso and head as one piece, with a stabilized head that won't wobble and isn't made in two pieces. </p><p><br /></p><p>I changed the yarn from fingering to dk weight (a concession to my ageing eyes). So here she is, all of six inches tall, along with a simple outfit made of cotton dk yarn.
