A Better Bear

I have a crochet pattern I would like to share with you; it is my 'Better Bear' pattern, because it took so many iterations to get it just the way I wanted it. In the picture above, the larger bears are about 3 1/2" tall; the smaller bears are about 1 1/4 " tall. I've had this pattern around for several years. I love to make these little bears as gifts, or as toys for other dolls, as with Lavender to the rigtht here :-)

The tiny bears may make you go blind trying to crochet them; they are made from size 10 crochet cotton and a size 7 hook. I only made three...that was enough for me! The larger bears are from sportweight, and are really quite easy. Of course, you can use any weight yarn with the appropriate hook. Crochet nice and tight so none of the stuffing shows.

Enjoy the bears! The pattern is here:

  3. Hi Beth, I love your little free spirit doll. I'm new to crochet, I've taught myself (with a little help from youtube tutorials on crochet. I have a few questions about the pattern. Please excuse me if I'm asking stupid questions.
I've made the body and head. I haven't gotten the eyes yet so I'm waiting on that. The three hook sizes? E, F, and 9steel, I see that E is for the body? right? The whole body? what are the other two for? The eyes whites? The pattern for the eyelids? I couldn't find it. You are so generous and kind, keep passing on the love!!! Thank you so much in advance. Kathleen

  4. Hi Beth, it's me again, I forgot to ask you about the pink cheeks, is it makeup? Paint? Does it wash out? It's really a nice touch to the dolls. Thanks again, and keep up the fantastic work! Kathleen

  6. Hi Diane,

The doll is a full size Free Spirit doll, the chair is from an Annie Potter Presents pattern, the November pattern of the "2000 Millenium Collection." These were a series of bed doll patterns for Barbie that included a piece of crochet furniture.

  10. Beth,
Help, please! I LOVE your Better Bear pattern but I am stuck/confused on the legs. I got down to the ankle and completed row 14 with 9 sc remaining. But Row 15 says "Sc in next two sc, (two dc in next sc) four times, sc in last three sc. 13 sts." There doesn't seem to be a way to make this work out mathematically. Can you check this? I think maybe you changed something at some point and the directions don't reflect how to make the foot properly. I really want to finish this for a baby shower. You can e-mail me at: sruupton@hotmail.com Thanks!
