Are you Sher-Locked?

So the question is, are you Sher-Locked??  I know I am :-)  I've fallen in love with the BBC's latest incarnation of that unparalleled detective intellect, Sherlock Holmes.

But this isn't an advert for the show (even though it sounds like one), but a sharing of my interpretation of Sherlock, in crochet and knit.

Crochet Sherlock

I used the crochet Bleuette pattern for the basic doll, modifying it just slightly:  two extra rows in the torso, one extra row in the thigh, and remove two stitches from the buttocks.  I chose Vanna's Choice Baby in lamb for his pale skin, and purchased a wig from Antina's Doll Supply

Sherlock's shirt and pants are crocheted in size 10 crochet cotton, his scarf is knit in size 10 Cebelia #931 (steel blue).  His overcoat is knit in Vanna's Choice dark grey heather, and the shoes are crochet in size 3 crochet cotton.

I painted his acrylic eyes metallic silver, but left the mouth unstitched (no way to capture those amazing lips).   I like the drape that knitting gives his coat, and it was quite simple, just squares and the smallest  bit of shaping.

  16. Oh I love your sherlock. Unfortunally sherlock is not so populair here in the Netherlands, but we watch the english tv a lot and so we saw Sherlock came by. Were really sherlock fans. Do you make a pattern of him (and watson?) Oh and I love the Merlin serie also. Here in the Netherlands they only broadcasted season 3 so we had to buy all dvd's (lol)...just waiting for season 5 (not out here yet) and season 1 (so hard to get)...maybe there will be a merlin doll also??

    1. Hi Patricia,

I don't know of any pattern per se, but if you do a google search for images of James Dean, you could probably take just about any crochet doll pattern and create your own James Dean, which would be truly an awesome gift for you son!

      Warmly,

      Beth

  36. Can I check something with you? I am making Sherlock's shirt following the instructions, but the shirt ended up being about four sizes too small. I'm obviously doing something wrong, but I don't know what. Size 8 steel hook is 1.25 mm, right? I did it using a 2mm hook and it still came out teeny. I'm at a loss. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It does not sound like the hook size is your problem; did you check your gauge? 8 single crochet = 1 inch for the shirt. If the gauge is right, then maybe your doll worked up bigger than mine did, so you might want to check the gauge on the doll.

If the pants fit, I'm not sure why the shirt did not. If you make another shirt, you might check the fit against the doll as you work, and add stitches as needed.

      warmly,

      Beth
