Size Matters...or, look at both yardage and weight when choosing your yarn!

These two dolls, from Sandy Nordwall Eggers' BoHo Hippie doll pattern, were made from Worsted Weight Yarn.  The one of the left, the smaller, used Bernat Super Value yarn.  The one on the right used Red Heart Super Saver yarn.  Same hook, same number of stitches.

The Bernat yarn worked up smaller, as it is thinner than the Red Heart yarn:

Bernat - 7 ounces/ 440 yards

Red Heart - 7 ounces/ 364 yards

That is a pretty big difference for two value priced yarns that are both labeled as Worsted Weight/ Medium/4.  And you can see it in the way they work up.

Not only that, the Bernat yarn feels cheaper.  I do not care for it, and I would not recommend it.

So, where is the best place to buy Red Heart Super Saver?  Try JoAnn's Fabrics.  If they don't have it in stock, you can order it online.  I've tried ordering Red Heart from Michaels...but you have to order SIX skeins for home delivery!  I might want six skeins of a skin color, but not for all the other colors.  Yarnspiration carries Red Heart, but it is almost twice as expensive from them as it is from JoAnn's.

So, enjoy the day, and enjoy the crochet!

  1. I have used red heart detroid for some time. There is a huge difference between colours. For example red is twice bigger than brown .. :).
Now I use yarnArt for amigurumi. I have discovered it recently.

    1. I have run into the same problem as well, and with yarns other than Red Heart. Seems that deeply colored yarns 'absorb' more dye, and so end up heavier. At least, that is what I think is going on. It is annoying that even within the same famiily of yarns the weight/yardage are not consisten!
